Medical writer

For 20 years, Kathryn has worked in clinical research, firstly managing clinical trials before focusing on writing documents to support the development of new medicines and printed/online materials to help patients. In 2010 she created Cathean Ltd and provides medical writing services to businesses, academics and physicians from around the world.

Here’s what Kathryn says about her unique career path:

‘In 2005, I combined my love of horses with that of writing when I was invited to write a regular column for online equestrian magazine, Eventing Worldwide. The column described my adventures as an amateur eventrider alongside my husband Ian. I also wrote several other pieces for this website, and interviewed some of my heroes from the sport of eventing. As a clinical research scientist in the pharmaceutical industry, my favourite tasks were writing documents to support the clinical development process, and preparing presentations, so I moved into medical writing. I love what I do and I still get a thrill when I see a manuscript or article published. As a medical writer I’m privileged to work with fantastic clients and across a wide variety of projects. In 2008 I became acutely aware of how short life is following my husband, Ian’s untimely death from a brain tumour. This prompted me to take the leap and set up my own business, Cathean Ltd, a thriving medical writing consultancy, with equestrian and creative writing as niche aspects. In 2018, my first book, Life Matters was published, with the second edition coming in 2020. This was followed in 2021 by Cappuccino, Cake and Chat.’

What is my difference?

I believe in working in partnership with all my clients to give them the best service I can. Having an open and honest environment in which to work is key to the success of each project. I am passionate about writing and understand the importance of providing concise, accurate and readable content.

Experience

With 25 years of working in medicine development, I have written a variety of documents, with experience in regulatory and medical communications writing across a wide range of therapy and medical areas. My clients include pharmaceutical companies, niche biotechnology and healthcare businesses, clinical research organisations, regulatory agencies, medical communications agencies, healthcare charities and academic institutions, across the world including the UK, Europe, the US and Japan.

My CV and a list of articles and publications can be provided on request.

Professional network

I am very fortunate to have access to a network of talented medical writing and clinical research professionals, who can provide additional expertise and resource, or back up if required for specific projects.

How can I help you?

I work with busy, talented people across the globe who require additional medical writing resource, or who may not have the time to write, or perhaps writing just isn’t ‘their thing’, or English is not their first language. I can help you plan the writing process, advise on content, write the drafts, manage review cycles, and complete the final formatting to produce high quality documents that meet your needs and the necessary regulations and standards. I also offer editing services or QC review of documents, as well as bespoke writing services for those one-off or unique documents which don’t fall under the usual regulatory or medical communication descriptions.
